Skin Cancer Home > Generic Aldara

You can buy a generic Aldara (imiquimod) product. This skin cream is available in the same strength and size as the brand-name medicine, and is made by various manufacturers. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has determined that these generic versions of Aldara are as good as the brand-name product, although they may contain different inactive ingredients.

Can I Buy Generic Aldara?

Aldara® (imiquimod cream) is a prescription medication approved to treat actinic keratosis (a type of precancerous skin lesion), basal cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer), and genital or perianal warts. It is a relatively expensive medication.
Aldara is made by Graceway Pharmaceuticals, LLC. However, it has since come off-patent and is available in generic form.

Available Strengths

Generic Aldara is available in one strength: Imiquimod 5% cream, in 0.25-gram packets (just like the brand-name version).

Who Makes Generic Aldara?

Generic Aldara is made by various companies, such as:
  • Perrigo New York, Inc.
  • E. Fougera and Co.
  • Glenmark Generics, Inc.
  • Sandoz, Inc.
  • Taro Pharmaceuticals U.S.A., Inc.

Is Generic Imiquimod as Good as Aldara?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns each generic a rating.
An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. All of the generic imiquimod versions currently available have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Aldara.
However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
