Sylatron Dosage

Your weight and how you respond to Sylatron are some of the considerations that will help determine your appropriate dosage of this drug. Sylatron comes as an injection that is given just under the skin (subcutaneously) once a week for up to five years. To help avoid common flu-like side effects, your healthcare provider may recommend taking Tylenol 30 minutes before each Sylatron injection.

An Introduction to Dosing With Sylatron

The dose of Sylatron™ (peginterferon alfa-2b) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on your weight and on how well you tolerate the medication. As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Sylatron Dosage for Melanoma

The recommended Sylatron dose for preventing malignant melanoma from returning after surgery is 6 mcg per kg (about 2.7 mcg per pound) each week for the first eight weeks, followed by 3 mcg per kg (about 1.4 mcg per pound) each week thereafter. Your healthcare provider may recommend a lower dosage if you develop dangerous side effects.

The concentration of Sylatron varies, depending on the strength of the vial. When mixed correctly, the concentration of each vial is as follows:

  • 40 mcg per 0.1 mL for the 296 mcg vials
  • 60 mcg per 0.1 mL for the 444 mcg vials
  • 120 mcg per 0.1 mL for the 888 mcg vials.

Your healthcare provider may recommend taking a nonprescription pain reliever, such as Tylenol® (acetaminophen), 30 minutes before each Sylatron injection. This can help prevent some of the flu-like symptoms, such as fever, chills, and muscle aches, which are quite common with Sylatron.

General Information on Using Sylatron

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with Sylatron include the following:

  • Sylatron comes as an injection. It is injected subcutaneously (just under the skin) once a week for up to five years.

  • Use Sylatron at the same time each week.

  • Each Sylatron vial is for a single use only. If your dose is less than the full vial, any unused portion must be discarded; it cannot be saved for later.

  • It is best to inject Sylatron into areas of the skin that have a layer of fat underneath. This includes the thigh, the outer upper arm, or stomach (away from the navel). Try to rotate the injection sites; do not inject in the same place twice in a row.

  • Make sure your healthcare provider teaches you exactly how to inject Sylatron. This includes:

    • How to prepare the skin
    • How to prepare and mix the injection
    • How to inject the medication
    • What to do with your used needles (this may vary, depending on the local laws and regulations).

If you are not comfortable with any part of the process, please let your healthcare provider know.

  • For the medication to work properly, it must be used as prescribed.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to your dose of Sylatron, please talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
