Merkel Cell Cancer Info

Also known as neuroendocrine cancer of the skin, Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare cancer that develops on or just beneath the skin and in the hair follicles. Because Merkel cells often resemble cells that are found in other types of cancer, this condition is difficult to diagnose. In order to diagnose Merkel cell cancer, your healthcare provider will gather information on your situation in a number of ways, including but not limited to:

  • Performing a biopsy
  • Checking the skin and examining the lymph nodes for signs of swelling
  • Taking a blood cell count.
  •
Surgery is the most common form of treatment for this type of cancer. Other options include radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
