Mekinist Chemotherapy Information

MekinistTM (trametinib) is a prescription drug used to treat advanced melanoma (a type of skin cancer). This prescription drug is specifically approved for use in adults, and is reserved for use when the cancer has spread to other areas of the body or cannot be treated with surgery.

A clinical study was performed to obtain information on the effectiveness of Mekinist. In this study, people were randomly assigned Mekinist or a chemotherapy medication (either dacarbazine or paclitaxel). Those given Mekinist had 4.8 months of treatment before their melanoma progressed further, while those given chemotherapy had a progression of their melanoma after only 1.5 months of treatment.

Mekinist comes as a tablet that is taken once daily. Most people who take this medicine will develop some type of side effect, such as diarrhea, swelling, or a rash.
