Mekinist Overdose

It is possible to overdose on Mekinist (trametinib). Resulting problems can include diarrhea, swelling, or abdominal (stomach) pain. If you believe you have taken too much of this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Treatment will likely involve administering activated charcoal, pumping the stomach, and providing supportive care to treat any resulting complications.

Can You Take Too Much Mekinist?

Mekinist™ (trametinib) is a prescription medication approved to treat melanoma, a type of skin cancer that begins in cells that make melanin, the substance that gives color to skin, hair, and eyes.
As with any medicine, it is possible to take too much Mekinist. The specific effects may vary, however, depending on a number of factors, including the Mekinist dosage and whether it was taken with any other medications or substances.

Effects of an Overdose

There is very little information available about the effects of a Mekinist overdose. In clinical trials, the highest doses given were 4 mg (two times the normally recommended human dose) and 10 mg (five times the normally recommended human dose). These doses caused potentially serious eye problems in 28 percent of people given the doses.
It is not unreasonable to assume that an overdose with Mekinist would cause other symptoms, including the usually expected Mekinist side effects. Such side effects may include but are not limited to:

Treatment Options for a Mekinist Overdose

If the overdose was recent, a healthcare provider may administer activated charcoal or "pump the stomach" to help reduce the amount of the medication absorbed into the bloodstream. Dialysis is not likely to be useful for removing Mekinist from the bloodstream.
Treatment will also involve supportive care, which consists of treating any symptoms that may occur as a result of the overdose.
Seek immediate medical attention if you believe you or someone else may have taken a Mekinist overdose.
