Mekinist and Breastfeeding

The manufacturer of Mekinist (trametinib) recommends that women either avoid breastfeeding during treatment or not take the drug. No studies have been done to determine if Mekinist passes through breast milk. However, this drug can cause potentially dangerous side effects, and if the drug does pass through breast milk, the nursing child could be put at risk.

Can Breastfeeding Women Take Mekinist?

Mekinist™ (trametinib) is a prescription medication used to treat certain people with advanced forms of a type of skin cancer known as melanoma. At this time, it is unknown if the medication passes through breast milk.

More Information About Mekinist and Breastfeeding

Mekinist has not been studied in nursing women. Therefore, it is unknown whether the drug passes through breast milk, or if it would harm a nursing child.
Many medicines pass through breast milk. Until more information is available, it is not unreasonable to assume Mekinist may also pass through breast milk. In addition, Mekinist is a strong anticancer medication. As with other anticancer medications, Mekinist has the potential to cause serious side effects. For these reasons, the drug's manufacturer recommends that women either breastfeed or take Mekinist, but not do both.
If your healthcare provider recommends Mekinist while breastfeeding, be sure to observe your child for any possible Mekinist side effects, such as a rash or diarrhea. Let your child's healthcare provider know if you notice anything out of the ordinary with your child.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and Mekinist use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
