Erivedge

Available by prescription only, Erivedge is a type of chemotherapy drug used to treat certain cases of basal cell carcinoma. It comes in the form of a capsule that is taken once daily. It works by binding to certain proteins in the body and interfering with cancer cell growth and survival. Side effects may include hair loss, weight loss, and muscle spasms.

What Is Erivedge?

Erivedge™ (vismodegib) is a prescription medication licensed for the treatment of basal cell carcinoma, the most common type of skin cancer. It is specifically approved for use when:

  • The cancer has come back after surgery
  • Surgery or radiation is not an option
  • The cancer has spread to other parts of the body (metastasized).

Erivedge is the first drug approved for metastatic basal cell carcinoma.

Who Makes This Medication?

Erivedge is made by Patheon, Inc., for Genentech USA, Inc.

How Does Erivedge Work?

Erivedge works by inhibiting what is known as the hedgehog pathway, a pathway that is active in signaling skin cancer cell growth. This drug blocks the hedgehog pathway by binding to a key protein in the pathway called the smoothened protein that activates other proteins involved in cell growth and survival. By binding to the smoothened protein, Erivedge prevents it from activating the other proteins, thus interfering with cancer cell growth and survival.

Clinical Effects

Erivedge has been studied in people with locally advanced or metastatic basal cell carcinoma (skin cancer). In these studies, 43 percent of people whose skin cancer had advanced to nearby tissue experienced a complete or partial shrinkage of their lesions after treatment with Erivedge. In addition, 30 percent of those with metastatic cancer had a partial shrinkage of their lesions after treatment.
