How Does Aldara Work?

Aldara® (imiquimod cream) can help treat certain conditions, including superficial basal cell carcinoma, actinic keratosis, and genital or perianal warts. But how does Aldara work?

It is not exactly clear how Aldara works to treat these various conditions. However, it is thought that the beneficial effects of the drug might be due to how it activates the immune system.

Aldara comes as a cream that is applied two to five times a week, depending on the particular condition being treated and whether you develop serious skin reactions. Possible side effects include skin dryness, swelling, and redness.
