Aldara for Genital Warts
People who have genital warts may receive a prescription medicine called Aldara® (imiquimod cream). Although Aldara is not a cure for genital warts, studies have shown that this medicated skin cream can help clear up warts in people age 12 and older.
It is not exactly known how Aldara works for treating genital warts. However, it is thought that this medicine works by stimulating the immune system.
Aldara comes as a skin cream. When used for treating genital warts, the standard dosage of Aldara is a thin layer applied before bedtime 3 times a week until the warts are gone, up to a maximum of 16 weeks. Apply it at bedtime, leave it on for 6 to 10 hours, and then wash it off in the morning.
